Metallica – “To Live Is To Die”

To Live Is to Die” is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica from their fourth studio album …And Justice for All.  It was released on August 25, 1988.

This song is a tribute to Metallica’s bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a tour bus crash. It is instrumental except the spoken word piece near the end – this was a poem that Cliff wrote before he died. Cliff Burton receives co-writers credit on “To Live Is to Die” as the bass line was a medley of unused bass recordings Burton had performed prior to his death. While the original recordings are not used on the track, the compositions are credited as written by Burton and are played by Metallica’s bassist at the time, Jason Newsted. The words spoken towards the end of the song (“when a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives…”) by Hetfield were written by German poet Paul Gerhardt, but are misattributed to Burton in the liner notes. Still, the second half of the speech (“All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?”) were written by Burton.

Metallica Singer James Hetfield explained to Mojo magazine December 2008 that this song is, “a homage to Cliff without going over the top.” He added: “It’s about realizing how grateful we were to have that time with him.”

Hall & Oates – “You Make My Dreams”

“You Make My Dreams” is a single by Hall & Oates. Released in May 2, 1981, this single is from their album Voices. The song reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1981.

In the October 16, 2009 issue of Entertainment Weekly, Daryl Hall listed this as one of his Top 5 Hall & Oates songs. He explained:

“It’s funny – it’s ubiquitous, especially now. I think because it’s such a happy song, just a pure expression of joy. And it’s set to a really old-time-gospel kind of groove. The fact that they use it in a pivotal scene in (500) Days of Summer… I’m very flattered.”

Hall & Oates wrote this keyboard-driven classic with Sara Allen, who was Daryl’s girlfriend and the subject of the song “Sara Smile.” John Oates in 2011 said of the track:

“It’s a great song, simple as that. Good songs are good songs. They stand on their own, they can be stripped away of the production. A song is what happens when a writer sits down on their individual instrument and creates something out of nothing. And there’s magic involved and there’s inspiration involved. ‘You Make My Dreams Come True’ represents a vibe, it represents a collaboration between myself and Daryl and the band in the studio in the ’80s. Its simplicity and directness is where the charm lies in that song.”

What I want, you’ve got
And it might be hard to handle
But like the flame that burns the candle
The candle feeds the flame
What I’ve got’s full stock of thoughts and dreams that scatter
You pull them all together
And how, I can’t explain
But you make my dreams come true
On a night when bad dreams become a screamer

When they’re messin’ with the dreamer
I can laugh it in the face
Twist and shout my way out
And wrape yourself around me
‘Cause I ain’t the way that you found me
I’ll never be the same
‘Cause you make my dreams come true
I’m down on the daydream
That sleepwalk should be over by now
I know that you make my dreams come true

Tears For Fears – “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”

Everybody Wants to Rule the World” is a song by the English band Tears for Fears. It was released in 18 March 1985. It was the band’s ninth single release in the United Kingdom and seventh UK Top 30 chart hit, peaking at number two in April 1985. In the U.S., this was their first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit on 8 June 1985, remaining there for two weeks.

The concept is quite serious – it’s about everybody wanting power, about warfare and the misery it causes.
Curt Smith

“Everybody Wants To Rule The World” is a line from the 1980 Clash song “Charlie Don’t Surf.”This song is about the quest for power, and how it can have unfortunate consequences. In an interview with Mix magazine, the band’s producer Chris Hughes explained that they spent months working on “Shout,” and near the end of the sessions, Roland Orzabal came into the studio and played two simple chords on his acoustic guitar, which became the basis for the song.

It was written and recorded in two weeks and was the final track to be added to the Songs from the Big Chair album. The shuffle beat was alien to our normal way of doing things. It was jolly rather than square and rigid in the manner of ‘Shout’, but it continued the process of becoming more extrovert.
Roland Orzabal

Welcome to your life
There’s no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you

Acting on your best behavior
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world

It’s my own design
It’s my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most

Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

There’s a room where the light won’t find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I’ll be right behind you

So glad we’ve almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

I can’t stand this indecision
Paired with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you’ll never never never never need it
One headline why believe it ?
Everybody wants to rule the world

All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

Game of Thrones Characters in the 80′s/90′s – Part 2

This new set by designer Mike Wrobel casts Ygritte as Jon Snow’s grunge contemporary, Sandor Clegane aka The Hound as the creepy school janitor, Tywin Lannister as the Chief of Police, and Bran as the kid version of Professor X . The color theme for Robb Stark and Talisa Maegyr is perfect, and the radical White Walker in windbreaker enjoying popsicle – Summer is Coming!!

Robb Stark
Talisa Maegyr
Ygritte needs the right outfit to come along with the Grunge version of Jon Snow
Sandor Clegane (The Hound) would be perfect as the typical creepy college janitor we can find in the 80s/90s slasher movies. Everything tends to make us believe he is the murderer, but come on! he wears a Homer Simpson t-shirt
Tywin Lannister, Chief of Police
Bran Stark
White Walker wearing a very 90’s neon windbreaker and enjoying a popsicle. Summer is coming.

Game of Thrones Characters in the 80’s/90’s

Ever wondered what Game of Thrones would look like if it took place in the 80′s or early 90’s? Well, you can put this question to rest thanks to Mike Wrobel. The graphic designer just put together these seriously cool renditions of some of the characters if they lived in the 80′s or early 90′s. Jon Snow, the Nirvana fan is my personal favorite.

Jon Snow, Grunge version
Arya Stark, tomboy
Sansa Stark, a Beverly Hills student
Khal Drogo, a hard rock musician
Daenerys Targaryen with Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion
Jaime Lannister, Miami Vice mode
Tyrion with an unlikely shirt straight out of an episode of Parker Lewis
Cersei, as an 80s glam rock star
Joffrey Baratheon
Bronn, relax as always, wearing the iconic Adidas tracksuit
Margaery Tyrell, in a very 90s floral dress
Brienne of Tarth in armour
Theon Greyjoy holding a hotdog (Those who watched season 3 will understand about the sausage…^_^)
